Fossils are literally the remains of numerous creatures that lived thousands or numerous years earlier. When these creatures passed away, they were buried in layers and layers of earth. While their flesh would certainly rot away, the more challenging components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain intact between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later on, those bones and shells can still be found, undamaged, as those layers of debris are once again uncovered.
