Fossils are essentially the remains of different creatures that lived thousands or millions of years earlier. When these animals died, they were hidden in layers and also layers of planet. While their flesh would rot away, the more challenging parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain undamaged in between the layers of sediment. Currently, all those years later, those bones and shells can still be found, intact, as those layers of sediment are once more unearthed.
