Fossils are actually the remains of various creatures that lived thousands or millions of years earlier. Once these creatures died, they were hidden in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the harder components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would certainly stay undamaged between the layers of debris.
