Fossils are actually the remains of numerous animals that lived thousands or numerous years ago. Once these creatures died, they were hidden in layers and layers of planet. While their flesh would rot away, the more difficult components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain undamaged in between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later, those bones as well as coverings can still be located, undamaged, as those layers of sediment are again uncovered.
