Fossils are literally the remains of different creatures that lived thousands or millions of years back. Once these animals passed away, they were hidden in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain intact in between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later on, those bones as well as coverings can still be discovered, undamaged, as those layers of debris are once again uncovered.
