Fossils are essentially the remains of various animals that lived thousands or countless years ago. When these animals died, they were hidden in layers and layers of planet. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain intact in between the layers of debris. Currently, all those years later, those bones and also shells can still be found, intact, as those layers of sediment are once more uncovered.
