Fossils are actually the remains of various creatures that lived thousands or millions of years ago. As soon as these animals died, they were buried in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the more difficult parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain undamaged in between the layers of debris. Currently, all those years later, those bones and coverings can still be located, intact, as those layers of debris are once more unearthed.
