Fossils are literally the remains of different creatures that lived thousands or millions of years earlier. Once these animals passed away, they were buried in layers and layers of planet. While their flesh would rot away, the more difficult parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain intact between the layers of sediment. Now, all those years later, those bones and coverings can still be discovered, undamaged, as those layers of debris are once again uncovered.
