Fossils are actually the remains of various animals that lived thousands or millions of years ago. Once these animals passed away, they were buried in layers and layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the more challenging components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would stay intact in between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later on, those bones and also coverings can still be found, intact, as those layers of debris are once more discovered.
