Fossils are literally the remains of different animals that lived thousands or countless years back. Once these animals died, they were hidden in layers as well as layers of planet. While their flesh would rot away, the harder components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain intact between the layers of sediment. Now, all those years later, those bones and also shells can still be found, intact, as those layers of debris are once again discovered.
