Fossils are literally the remains of numerous creatures that lived thousands or numerous years ago. Once these creatures passed away, they were hidden in layers and layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain intact between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later on, those bones and shells can still be located, intact, as those layers of debris are once again unearthed.
