Fossils are actually the remains of different animals that lived thousands or countless years back. As soon as these animals died, they were buried in layers and layers of planet. While their flesh would rot away, the more difficult parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would certainly remain undamaged in between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later, those bones and coverings can still be found, intact, as those layers of debris are once more uncovered.
