Fossils are actually the remains of various creatures that lived thousands or numerous years ago. Once these animals passed away, they were buried in layers and also layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would certainly stay undamaged between the layers of sediment. Now, all those years later on, those bones and coverings can still be discovered, intact, as those layers of debris are again discovered.
