Fossils are actually the remains of various animals that lived thousands or millions of years ago. Once these animals died, they were buried in layers and also layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the more challenging parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would certainly remain intact in between the layers of debris.
