Fossils are literally the remains of various creatures that lived thousands or countless years back. As soon as these creatures passed away, they were buried in layers and also layers of earth. While their flesh would certainly rot away, the more challenging components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would certainly remain intact in between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later on, those bones and shells can still be found, intact, as those layers of debris are once again uncovered.
