Fossils are literally the remains of various creatures that lived thousands or millions of years ago. When these creatures died, they were buried in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would certainly rot away, the more challenging components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain undamaged between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later on, those bones and shells can still be found, undamaged, as those layers of sediment are again uncovered.
