Fossils are essentially the remains of various creatures that lived thousands or countless years back. When these creatures passed away, they were hidden in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher parts of their body, such as shells, bones, etc, would stay intact in between the layers of sediment. Now, all those years later on, those bones as well as shells can still be located, intact, as those layers of debris are once more unearthed.
