Fossils are literally the remains of numerous animals that lived thousands or millions of years back. Once these creatures died, they were hidden in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would certainly remain undamaged between the layers of sediment. Now, all those years later on, those bones and shells can still be found, intact, as those layers of sediment are once more discovered.
