Fossils are literally the remains of different creatures that lived thousands or millions of years back. As soon as these creatures passed away, they were buried in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would stay intact in between the layers of sediment. Now, all those years later on, those bones and also coverings can still be found, intact, as those layers of sediment are once again unearthed.
