Fossils are actually the remains of various creatures that lived thousands or numerous years back. Once these creatures died, they were hidden in layers as well as layers of planet. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher parts of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would stay intact between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later, those bones and coverings can still be found, undamaged, as those layers of debris are once more discovered.
