Fossils are literally the remains of numerous creatures that lived thousands or countless years earlier. As soon as these animals died, they were buried in layers and layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the harder components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would certainly stay intact in between the layers of debris. Currently, all those years later on, those bones as well as coverings can still be found, intact, as those layers of sediment are once more discovered.
