Fossils are essentially the remains of numerous creatures that lived thousands or millions of years earlier. Once these animals passed away, they were buried in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain intact between the layers of sediment.
