Fossils are actually the remains of different creatures that lived thousands or numerous years ago. When these creatures passed away, they were buried in layers and also layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the tougher components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would stay undamaged between the layers of sediment. Now, all those years later, those bones as well as coverings can still be found, intact, as those layers of sediment are once again uncovered.
