Fossils are literally the remains of numerous creatures that lived thousands or millions of years earlier. As soon as these creatures passed away, they were hidden in layers and layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the more challenging components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would certainly remain intact in between the layers of sediment. Now, all those years later, those bones and also coverings can still be located, intact, as those layers of debris are once again uncovered.
