Fossils are literally the remains of various creatures that lived thousands or millions of years ago. As soon as these creatures died, they were hidden in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the more challenging components of their body, such as shells, bones, etc, would certainly remain intact between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later on, those bones and coverings can still be found, intact, as those layers of sediment are once more uncovered.
