Fossils are actually the remains of numerous creatures that lived thousands or numerous years back. Once these animals died, they were hidden in layers as well as layers of earth. While their flesh would rot away, the more difficult components of their body, such as coverings, bones, etc, would remain intact between the layers of debris. Now, all those years later on, those bones and shells can still be discovered, undamaged, as those layers of debris are once more uncovered.
